- 1. _I_n_t_r_o_d_u_c_t_i_o_n
-
- MineSet(TM) provides tools for the analysis and
- visualization of large quantities of data. MineSet includes
- the following components:
-
- +o The Tool Manager is the front end to the MineSet tool
- suite, allowing the user to specify data to be
- retrieved from a database or flat file, perform
- operations on that file, pass the data to a mining
- tool, and specify the visualization of the data.
-
- +o The Data Mover is the server process that connects to
- the database, performs processing on the data, and
- invokes the mining tools.
-
- +o The server application engine which performs the actual
- mining operations is generically called "MIndUtil."
- There are two available versions of MIndUtil: one
- which is capable of executing parallel computation
- threads (MIndUtil_p), and one which is simply single-
- threaded (MIndUtil_s), which in previous MineSet
- releases was called "MIndUtil." The parallel
- MIndUtil_p can execute on IRIX 6.2 (with patches), 6.4
- (with patches), and 6.5, but not on IRIX 6.3 on O2
- systems.
-
- +o The Record Viewer displays MineSet data files in
- tabular format.
-
- +o The Statistics Visualizer displays basic statistics on
- the data, such as mean, standard deviation, quartiles,
- number of values, and histograms.
-
- +o The Scatter Visualizer and the Splat Visualizer allow
- the visualization of data that has many dimensions.
- The Scatter Visualizer shows individual points or
- aggregates, while the Splat Visualizer uses spatial
- aggregation to show a distribution of the records.
-
- +o The Tree Visualizer allows visualization of
- hierarchical data; it is also used to visualize the
- structure of the Decision Tree Classifier and
- Regression Tree models.
-
- +o The Map Visualizer allows visualization of data across
- geographically meaningful areas.
-
- +o The MineSet_WebLaunch allows mineset visualization to
- be viewable via Netscape. It also includes utilities
- for non-SGI clients to launch and view MineSet

- visualization tools over the web and to embed mineset
- visualization files as html tags.
-
- +o The Column Importance tool finds the important columns
- for determining the value of a given label column. It
- can be used to automatically find the best three
- columns to use with the Scatter Visualizer.
-
- +o The Cluster Visualizer displays Statviz-like basic
- statistics for each cluster determined by the
- clustering analytical tool.
-
- +o The Association Rules Generator determines correlations
- that exist in the data.
-
- +o The Association Rules Visualizer displays the rules
- determined by the Association Rules Generator.
-
- +o The Decision Tree Inducer generates a decision tree
- classifier from a training set (a set of data that the
- user has already classified). The structure of the
- classifier's decision tree can be displayed using the
- Tree Visualizer. The classifier can also be used to
- classify new (unclassified) data in order to make
- predictions.
-
- +o The Option Tree Inducer generates an option tree
- classifier from a training set. The structure of the
- classifier's option tree can be displayed using the
- Tree Visualizer. The classifier can also be used to
- classify new (unclassified) data in order to make
- predictions.
-
- +o The Evidence Inducer generates an evidence model
- (simple Bayesian network) from a training set. The
- structure of the classifier can be displayed using the
- Evidence Visualizer. The classifier can also be used
- to classify new (unclassified) data in order to make
- predictions.
-
- +o The Evidence Visualizer displays the evidence model of
- the Evidence Classifier.
-
- MineSet 2.5 is the latest version of MineSet. MineSet 2.5
- adds parallelization, clustering, regression trees, the
- decision table visualizer, and other new features to
- existing tools. These new features are described in chapter
- 4 of these release notes.

- After you install the online release notes for a product
- (the _r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s subsystem), you can view the release notes on
- your screen.
-
- Note: You can read the online release notes for most
- products before installing the software. Refer to
- the booklet in your CD-ROM case for more information.
-
- If you have a graphics system, select ``Release Notes'' from
- the Help submenu of the Toolchest. This displays the
- _g_r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s(1) graphical browser for the online release notes.
