  8.        1.  _I_n_t_r_o_d_u_c_t_i_o_n

  10.        MineSet(TM) provides tools for the analysis and
  11.        visualization of large quantities of data.  MineSet includes
  12.        the following components:
  13.  
  14.           +o The Tool Manager is the front end to the MineSet tool
  15.             suite, allowing the user to specify data to be
  16.             retrieved from a database or flat file, perform
  17.             operations on that file, pass the data to a mining
  18.             tool, and specify the visualization of the data.
  19.  
  20.           +o The Data Mover is the server process that connects to
  21.             the database, performs processing on the data, and
  22.             invokes the mining tools.
  23.  
  24.           +o The server application engine which performs the actual
  25.             mining operations is generically called "MIndUtil."
  26.             There are two available versions of MIndUtil:  one
  27.             which is capable of executing parallel computation
  28.             threads (MIndUtil_p), and one which is simply single-
  29.             threaded (MIndUtil_s), which in previous MineSet
  30.             releases was called "MIndUtil."  The parallel
  31.             MIndUtil_p can execute on IRIX 6.2 (with patches), 6.4
  32.             (with patches), and 6.5, but not on IRIX 6.3 on O2
  33.             systems.

  35.           +o The Record Viewer displays MineSet data files in
  36.             tabular format.
  37.  
  38.           +o The Statistics Visualizer displays basic statistics on
  39.             the data, such as mean, standard deviation, quartiles,
  40.             number of values, and histograms.

  42.           +o The Scatter Visualizer and the Splat Visualizer allow
  43.             the visualization of data that has many dimensions.
  44.             The Scatter Visualizer shows individual points or
  45.             aggregates, while the Splat Visualizer uses spatial
  46.             aggregation to show a distribution of the records.

  48.           +o The Tree Visualizer allows visualization of
  49.             hierarchical data; it is also used to visualize the
  50.             structure of the Decision Tree Classifier and
  51.             Regression Tree models.

  53.           +o The Map Visualizer allows visualization of data across
  54.             geographically meaningful areas.

  56.           +o The MineSet_WebLaunch allows mineset visualization to
  57.             be viewable via Netscape. It also includes utilities
  58.             for non-SGI clients to launch and view MineSet

  78.             for determining the value of a given label column.  It
  79.             can be used to automatically find the best three
  80.             columns to use with the Scatter Visualizer.

  82.           +o The Cluster Visualizer displays Statviz-like basic
  83.             statistics for each cluster determined by the
  84.             clustering analytical tool.

  86.           +o The Association Rules Generator determines correlations
  87.             that exist in the data.

  90.             determined by the Association Rules Generator.

  92.           +o The Decision Tree Inducer generates a decision tree
  93.             classifier from a training set (a set of data that the
  94.             user has already classified).  The structure of the
  95.             classifier's decision tree can be displayed using the
  96.             Tree Visualizer.  The classifier can also be used to
  97.             classify new (unclassified) data in order to make
  98.             predictions.

  100.           +o The Option Tree Inducer generates an option tree
  101.             classifier from a training set.  The structure of the
  102.             classifier's option tree can be displayed using the
  103.             Tree Visualizer.  The classifier can also be used to

  107.           +o The Evidence Inducer generates an evidence model
  108.             (simple Bayesian network) from a training set.  The
  109.             structure of the classifier can be displayed using the

  115.             the Evidence Classifier.

  117.        MineSet 2.5 is the latest version of MineSet.  MineSet 2.5

  120.        existing tools.  These new features are described in chapter
